A tip from "The Dog Whisperer"

I am a huge fan of the Dog Whisperer show! I was watching one of his shows where he was showing a woman that she could use a long stick as an extension of her arm. As she was walking, when the dog would try to walk in front of her, she just used the "arm extension" to remind him to walk beside her.

I have a long walking stick and thought I would try this approach with the horses. After they eat, I usually just let them out of their stalls and they head outside. I don't lead them out individually, so sometimes they get side tracked and want to check to see if the lid is secure on the grain pail or try to grab an extra mouth-full of hay before they head out.

The last few days I have been using the walking stick as an arm extension and it works great! I don't use it in a threatening manner - It just makes it so I am able to reach a little further than I normally would be able to. I can discourage them from getting sidetracked and they head right outside. Thanks Cesar!
