When you are shopping for hay, offer to pick it up right from the field after it is bailed. A lot of farmers will cut you a good deal if they know they won't have to load and store the hay at all. Plus you will be able to make sure it is stored properly. This works best if you have a trailer to load it onto and lots of strong helpers!
