I found this great idea on Craigslist! Someone had taken plastic barrels and made them into hay feeders. I have cut this type of barrel in half before, so I know they aren't too difficult to cut. I think you could use the photo as a guide to creating a pattern. I think the biggest concern would be making sure the edges aren't too sharp.
