It's cold out there! Should my horse have a blanket on?

I was wondering how do you know when to put a horse blanket on your horse? I'm wet behind the ears. Thanks, Lois

Great question! I personally do not blanket Cody and Milo. If it is really cold, windy or a lot of snow coming down, I keep them inside in their stalls. I think shelter from the wind is probably the most important concern. They have nice thick winter coats that help keep them toasty warm all winter.

If a horse is body clipped, then it would need the added protection of a blanket. Also, older or sick horses may need the extra warmth on really cold days. Dr. Jessica Jahiel gave a wonderful answer to this question. Check it out here:
